Whoa…. it seems clear to us that there’s a strong correlation between the how bad 808s can get and how great it can be. Obviously, the album just feasts on negativity, so this feature shouldn’t be too surprising. The debut song on the album—this one—is good a microcosm for the album as a whole, and the video for this song is a stunning visual representation of the song.
The lyrics to this (and most of the songs) are pretty horrible in most conventional senses. My friend show me pictures of his kids, and all I can show him is pictures of my cribs? Meh, who really gives a flip about that. But the track somehow overcomes its abominable lyrical tropes and Kanye’s abiding narcissism. The repetitive, simple beat is as bleak as a Joy Division song. Likewise, this video takes a simple idea—breakdown, decay, atrophy, whathaveyou—and just straight rides it into transcendence.
